1784  The separation of the province [of Nova Scotia] into two governments is determined upon in the cabinet. That of St. Johns which is to be called New Ireland, has been offered by General Fox.
1875  We find that in the year 1780, an act for altering the name of the island from St. John to that of New Ireland was passed in the assembly with a suspending clause.
1907  The name of New Ireland was proposed at different times for each of these new provinces. The Legislature of Prince Edward (Island) in 1780 adopted the name, but the Sovreign disapproved.
